An event to come together with fellow data-vis enthusiasts to exchange ideas!

Dear data vis enthusiast,

Over a year ago we organised a data visualisation get-together in Eindhoven. We enjoyed it a lot last time so we wanted to organise another one! On February 12th, 2020 the second edition of the Data Vis Knowledge Exchange will take place in Eindhoven.

Like the previous time we want to use the power of data visualisation to bring together a wide range of disciplines, from journalism, to technology, science to fashion, cartography to health care. Our goal is to stimulate the exchange of ideas and knowledge, inspiration and potentially create collaborations.

For this edition we want to focus on the process behind the visualisation. Even though you yourself or your client expects a beautiful image, a lot comes before you arrive at that end point. In your analysis or design process you choose a direction but then might hit a roadblock. You discover that the initial idea doesn’t really work in practice and you need to try again to succeed. These iterations are (often) not so visible anymore in the end result, but do provide interesting knowledge for the design process! So this Data Vis Knowledge Exchange we give the subtitle Behind the Picture.

There will be a main presentation, after which there will be an open podium where participants can share their work and ideas in the form of brief, 10 minute lightning talks. There is also the possibility to share an example of your work which will be projected during the evening in a showreel. We would love to see work-in-progress material or work that illustrates an important change in direction in a project.

We are very happy that Sonja Kuijpers will come and give the main presentation. Sonja studied Public Space at the Design Academy Eindhoven. She is currently working as an independent designer on multiple data visualisation projects under the name STUDIO TERP. Recently she won the Information Is Beautiful Award for her touching visualisation A View on Despair.

Lightning talks - Behind the picture

You can present your work in a 10 minute lightning talk. This does not need to be “finished” work! In fact, it may just be a sketch or idea you have, or a dataset in which you are stuck. We would love to see work-in-progress material or work that illustrates an important change in direction in a project. You can sign up for a lightning talk using the link or decide on the eve itself and let us know then!

Showreel

Everyone can share an example of their work which will then be projected (on a separate screen) during the evening. Email us (sara@thedatavisionlab.com) a (series of) images (JPG, 1920 x 1080 pixels) or a videa (MOV, max 30 sec) and we will add it to this showreel.
